Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher are two separate programs that are administered at our 190 E Main Street office.

Public Housing:  Abingdon Housing owns & operates 28 apartments in Abingdon, VA.  Participants accept an apartment in one of our complexes, sign a dwelling lease with us, and pay 30% of their adjusted gross income for rent.

Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program:  Eligible applicants are issued vouchers allowing them to search for housing owned by private landlords within the Town Limits of Abingdon.  If the landlord is willing to lease to the family and enter into a contract with Abingdon Housing, then Abingdon Housing will pay a portion of the monthly rent to the landlord based on current federal regulations. Program participants will pay to the landlord between 30% to 40% of their annual gross income less applicable deductions for their portion of the rent.

Your name will be placed on the waiting list based on the date and time of application. Once your application nears the top of the waiting list, you will be contacted by a staff member.

All applicants for Public Housing and the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program must successfully complete the screening process (income eligibility, criminal background check, and prior HUD program participation) in order to be housed or issued a voucher.  Public Housing applicants will also have their applications screened for prior landlord and credit history.
